Losing those last few pounds can be quite challenging especially if you’re low on energy and motivation from being on a carbohydrate reduced diet. Your body is VERY good at holding on to those last few pounds.
If you’ve been strict with your diet and exercise program but just can’t seem to lose those last 5 to 10 or even15 pounds, then this strategy will work for you.
There’s nothing fancy or complicated about this method at all. Its simply involves reducing your carbohydrates to almost nothing for a few days.
Here’s how it works: Let’s say you’ve been eating an average of150 gramsof carbohydrates every day for the past 3 months. Now in order for this method to be effective you’ll have to reduce your carbs by at least another50 gramsa day for 5 days.
We don’t want to eliminate all carbs here, but just a few more. Now assuming that you’re being strict and consistent with your weight training and cardio regiment, this will work wonders.
Without getting too scientific on you, here’s how this will help you shed those last few pounds:
Reducing your carbohydrates to almost nothing for just 5 days will cause your body to enter dietary ketosis. Ketosis occurs when your blood has a high concentration of ketones.
Ketosis occurs as a result of a change in your body’s energy creation pathways. Normal energy creation centers on glucose or blood sugar. Your body gets glucose directly from your diet. The brain and blood cells among other cells are dependent on glucose to function normally.
In a very low carbohydrate diet, when your body is not getting any new glucose, it will use its own glucose stores in the liver. After your body has used up all the liver storage, your body will make more glucose from muscle tissue.
**It’s VERY important to remain on a high protein diet or even increase your protein intake during this time. As you DO NOT want your body to start using your muscle tissue for energy. **
When your body is in this state because of a limited energy (carb) supply, you’ll begin breaking down large amounts of fat stores for energy.
As fat is broken down to be used for energy, it releases smaller energy units into the bloodstream. These energy units will be used by your brain, red blood cells and other cells. As they use the fat for energy, it releases a byproduct or end product called a ketone.
**This method will work best if you’ve been on a low carb diet for a significant amount of time (at least 8 weeks) **.
After 5 days, continue to eat your normal amounts of carbs for at least 1 week. After 1 week you should again significantly reduce your carbs for 5 days.
This WILL NOT be easy by any means as and I do not recommend you try this unless you’re very disciplined with your training and eating and can “tough it out” for 5 days. You might start feeling nauseous, very low on energy and weak during those five days.
Repeat this “carb manipulation” process for at least 4 weeks to experience dramatic results.
Only do this until you’ve reached your desired body fat percent and weight.
This is not a long term solution but rather a way to trick your body into using more fat for energy for a short period of time.
