A beautiful smile is the natural result of proper dental care and an important key to being successful today. Of course the dentist can provide laser and photo whitening procedures, but many find that to be expensive and inconvenient. The good news is that there are a number of simple but effective natural teeth whitening remedies that can help you keep those pearly whites beaming
Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, lemon and even strawberries can be used at home, but care is needed in applying these home remedies in order not to damage tooth enamel
Before you whiten your teeth at home, you should consult an experienced dentist to avoid discoloration
Teeth whitening with baking soda
Teeth whitening with soda is a popular home method. The majority of dentists agree that soda is safe, effective and quick. It is even more effective when combined with other methods of whitening but It shouldn’t be done more than once a week
Teeth whitening at home with soda should be carried out with care. Simply dip your toothbrush in soda and gently brush your teeth for a minute. Or mix the soda with toothpaste – which is safer for tooth enamel. A few drops of lemon juice added to the soda is also beneficial. This mixture should be used once every two weeks.
Teeth Whitening with Activated Charcoal
Our ancestors sought out a glowing smile using wood ash. The charcoal was sieved, then put on one’s finger and rubbed onto the teeth. Today, ashes have been replaced with ordinary activated carbon, which can be bought at any pharmacy. Just dip your toothbrush in the powder and brush your teeth for 1-2 minutes.
This method helps get rid of plaque, but can have an abrasive effect on tooth enamel. Make sure to crush the charcoal finely so that there are no large particles left that can damage the enamel. Activated charcoal can be used once every three days.
Strawberry teeth whitening
Strawberries are another natural bleaching agent. Just mash the berries and apply the paste to your teeth for a few minutes. You could also simply chew some strawberries and keep them in your mouth for a minute or two, then brush your teeth. This sweet and safe way of whitening can be done daily.
Strawberries can also be used with soda. Take one strawberry and ½ teaspoon soda and make a paste. Rub the paste over your teeth and hold for 5-7 minutes. Brush and rinse thoroughly. Use this method no more than once a month.
Herbal teeth whitening
You can also whiten your teeth at home with herbs such as sage, nettle, oak bark, and mint. Make a paste and apply it as you would with toothpaste. As well as being an effective teeth whitener, these herbs are beneficial for your gums and dental health.
Teeth whitening with essential oils
Teeth whitening at home can be done using essential oils. Orange, grapefruit, lemon and tea tree oils are good examples. Simply add a drop of oil onto your toothpaste and brush as normal.
You could also dip your toothbrush into soda and add a drop of essential oil and brush.
Teeth whitening with hydrogen peroxide
Using hydrogen peroxide is perhaps the most effective way to whiten your teeth. After a normal brushing, mix 20 drops of hydrogen peroxide with ¼ cup water and swish in your mouth for 2 minutes. Rinse well afterwards.
Alternatively, using a Qtip, rub hydrogen peroxide on your teeth for a minute, then brush (no toothpaste) and rinse well.
This should be done only once a week as more frequent use can damage your enamel.
Tooth whitening with banana peel
Tooth whitening using banana peels is one of the simplest, least expensive and most unique ways to brighten your smile. It won’t give you Hollywood whiteness, but according to the natural cosmetology community it improves the health of your teeth and gets rid of yellowish staining. You need: bananas and patience. As banana peels work delicately, at least two weeks of use is needed before you will see a result.
It is best to choose ripe bananas which don’t have any brown spots on the peel. Yellow healthy bananas contain the largest amount of minerals. It is best to buy 3-4 at a time, one banana per day so you won’t end up with over ripened bananas.
How its done:
- Peel the banana, and cut in half lengthwise. Cut each half into two strips about 2” by 1.5” in size.
- Brush your teeth, as brushing will remove the upper plaque from the teeth therefore increasing the contact surface.
- Put the first strip onto your closed teeth and close your lips. At this stage the enamel absorbs the necessary substances most effectively. This is enhanced by warmth. Hold for 2 minutes. Remove.
- Now put the second strip on your teeth and massage it into all the cracks and crevices for 3 minutes.
- Close your teeth again and cover them with a fresh strip for about a minute.
- Remove the peel taking care not to touch your teeth with the inside of your lips. Hold this “smile” for 6-7 minutes.
- Using a dry toothbrush, brush your teeth well to distribute all that goodness.
- Rinse your mouth and the brush thoroughly.
- Finally give your teeth a normal brushing to clean away any remnants of the banana.
For a visible effect, you need to repeat this procedure at least twice a day.
